On the International Climate Day celebrated on May 15, the Karelian Research Center RAS held a webinar “Regional-level Cooperation on Climate Change Research in the BRICS”. It gathered experts from Russia, Belarus, China, India and Ethiopia. Scientists discussed modern approaches to the study of various factors influencing climate change on the planet.
In her opening address, KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet reminded that since 2023 the Karelian Research Center RAS, with the support and direct participation of the National Committee for BRICS Research (Russia), has been organizing the international conference “Regional Cooperation in the BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues”. This is the first event to focus specifically on promoting regional-level cooperation between scientists from BRICS+ countries. At the 2024 conference, Olga Bakhmet stated that KarRC RAS is willing to become a platform for networking between BRICS scientists on environmental issues. This willingness was documented in the conference final resolution.
"Today's webinar launches a series of events we have planned in follow-up to the conferences and which are intended to establish and foster interactions between scientists from the BRICS Plus countries at the regional level. Peer-to-peer connections between scientists and networking is a most efficient way to cooperate, giving the opportunity to organize joint research activities and prepare project proposals to address topical issues of mutual interest in a relatively short amount of time", – stressed the Director General.
Karelia was represented in the webinar by the Head of the Geography and Hydrology Laboratory of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS Aleksey Tolstikov and Senior Researcher of the KarRC RAS Department for Multidisciplinary Research Dmitry Yekimov.
Aleksey Tolstikov presented the results of climate change modeling for the White Sea region up to the end of the XXI century based on the precipitation sampling and estimation methods. Dmitry Yekimov spoke about the causes of incertainties in the estimation of soil carbon fluxes, including flaws in the equipment and techniques for measuring and estimating CO2 emissions. The presentation showcased the activities of the Laboratory for Ecological Monitoring and Modeling DMR KarRC RAS within the RITM Carbon project.

An international online seminar focusing on modern approaches to the study of various forcings of global climate change was held the other day at KarRC RAS. Its participants were scientists from five countries. The event is a continuation of the networking between scientists from regions of BRICS+ countries initiated by the Karelian Research Center RAS.

Scientists of the Karelian Research Centre RAS propose restoring Karelian forests using locally sourced and bred planting stock
Scientists of the KarRC RAS took part in a meeting of the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, with representatives of the scientific community, members of the regional Legislative Assembly, as well as heads of the republic’s agencies, enterprises, and organizations dealing with reforestation.
Speaking at the meeting, KarRC RAS CEO Olga Bakhmet and Director of the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS Boris Raevsky focused on research results, analyzed the situation with forest regeneration in Karelia, and proposed recommendations for augmenting and accelerating forest regeneration using domestic production of seeds and seedlings.

The talk focused on the development of technologies for bioeconomy and their application in bio-ecovillages.
