PORA and Karelian Research Centre RAS signed a cooperation agreement

On November 14, Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Project Office for Arctic Development (PORA) signed in Petrozavodsk a Strategic Partnership Agreement. The document was undersigned by PORA Director General Maxim Dankin and KarRC RAS Acting Director General Olga Bakhmet.

KarRC RAS CEO Olga Bakhmet joined a council under Russian Presidential Executive Office

Olga Bakhmet, CEO of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, joined the Scientific Expert Council under the Interdepartmental Working Group of the Russian Presidential Executive Office. At its first meeting, the council will discuss the preparation of the fifth volume of the National Report on Global Climate and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources.

First issue of the new Studia Nordica journal is out at KarRC RAS

The first issue of the new online scientific journal Studia Nordica was published in October 2025 by the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Centre RAS. The journal succeeds to the Nordic and Baltic Studies Review published in 2016-2023, and is meant to continue and advance on the track set by the Review.

Logging affects the wild forest reindeer population in Karelia

Having analyzed the movements of wild reindeer in Karelia zoologists found that the animals’ preferred habitats are forests, as well as wetlands and lake shores. Clearcut areas, on the other hand, tend to be avoided due to high risk of getting killed by predators and lack of food. However, the availability of habitats suitable for this red-listed species in the republic is decreasing because of intensive forestry. To preserve the valuable habitats it is necessary to establish new protected areas or protective forest areas.

Head of Karelia acknowledged the contribution of KarRC RAS team to creating the monument of Irina Fedosova

Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov pointed out the contribution made by specialists from the Karelian Research Centre RAS to the creation of the monument of an outstanding taleteller Irina Fedosova of Zaonezhje in Petrozavodsk. The Letter of Appreciation from the Republic’s leader was delivered to KarRC RAS.

KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet informed Yasnaya Polyana Forum about Karelian scientists’ Arctic studies

KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet gave a talk at the Strategizing session of the 18th Yasnaya Polyana International Environmental Forum. She presented the experience of Karelian scientists in Arctic studies. Experts perform integrated monitoring of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Much attention is given to studying the biomedical and social problems among residents of Arctic territories.

Two scholars from KarRC RAS receive high-level government awards

Today, 30th October 2025, in the run-up to the National Unity Day, Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov handed over high-level government awards to two Karelian scientists, representatives of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS. Evgeny Ieshko was awarded the Order of Honor, and Nina Nemova received the Medal of Merit of the Republic of Karelia.

Plaque in memory of renowned sylviculturist and mycologist Vladimir Shubin was opened in Petrozavodsk

October 29 is the hundredth anniversary of birth of Vladimir Ivanovich Shubin, Merited Scientist of the Russian Federation, a distinguished sylviculturist and mycologist, and a WWII veteran. On this day, a plaque in memory of the scientist was unveiled in Petrozavodsk. The conglomerate stone surface portrays the primary objects of his research.

Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS celebrates its 95th anniversary

The session of the Learned Council of the Karelian Research Centre RAS on October 28, 2025 was devoted to a landmark event – anniversary of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS – the oldest institution in the academy’s humanities sphere in Karelia. The session included an award ceremony for the institute’s employees. The gathering also listened to a lecture devoted to the centennial anniversary of birth of one of ILLH’s ex-directors Maria Vlasova and to a presentation of the Studia Nordica Journal, as well as watched an issue of the local SAMPO TV Territory of Culture program telling about the institute’s anniversary.
